Objectives: Osteoporosis is characterized by a decrease in both bone mass and strength. It can result in an increase risk of fractures. Assessing osteoporosis requires examining both bone mass and the architectural change of a trabecular bones, because the loss of bone strength may be resulted from the combinational contribution. In the present study, we propose applicability of the trabecular bone architecture using fractal dimension analysis and characteristic lacuna from lacunarity analysis for the SEM 3D image as tool for assessing the progress of osteoporosis.
Methods: Fifteen-week old female SD rats were grouped into three: (1) normal control group, (2) ovariectomized group for 4 weeks, (3) ovariectomized and administrated high-dose estrogen for 4 weeks. Their proximal tibia were extracted and prepared for SEM. We took the 3D pictures of trabecular bone structure. They have been scanned and digitized. Fractal dimension is analyzed and characteristic lacuna from lacunarity analysis is introduced.
Results: Fractal dimension using power spectrum method has been incorporated and their result is not so consistent, suggesting some other factors should be extracted beyond the fractal dimension. However, characteristic lacuna shows consistent tendency and distinctiveness.
Conclusion: Characteristic lacuna from lacunarity analysis is presented as a very promising parameter of assessing the progress of osteoporosis and we suggest the usefulness of the characteristic lacuna as a determining factor of textural status of the trabecular bones.
